Building confidence before the ambulance arrives
Good event medical provision depends on more than having people present. It depends on having responders with the right knowledge, practical competence and confidence to act appropriately when an incident occurs.iREC®3 provides a respected, quality-assured route for developing that capability. It supports the needs of Learners, Centres, employers and event organisers while helping immediate responders prepare for real situations in which calm, structured and timely action matters.
Whether the setting is a festival, stadium, outdoor show, community event or busy public venue, iREC®3 helps ensure that the person who arrives first is prepared to make a difference.
At a festival, stadium, outdoor show or community event, the first few minutes of a medical emergency can be critical. Before an ambulance arrives, event responders need the confidence to assess what is happening, provide appropriate immediate care and communicate effectively with the wider medical team. That capability begins with high-quality, relevant training.
The FutureQuals Level 3 Award in Immediate Response Emergency Care (RQF), known as iREC®3, has been designed for people who provide immediate care in event, security and other public-facing environments. It gives Learners the knowledge, practical skills and professional understanding needed to respond safely and effectively before the arrival of an ambulance.
For event organisers, it offers a regulated qualification aligned with recognised event-industry guidance. For training Centres, it provides a relevant and innovative addition to their pre-hospital care portfolio. For Learners, it creates a strong foundation for delivering immediate care with confidence.
Developed for the realities of event response
Events present distinctive medical challenges. Responders may be working in crowded environments, across large sites, in changing weather conditions or in locations where ambulance access is not immediate. They may need to assess a patient, recognise a time-critical condition, begin treatment and provide an effective clinical handover while remaining within their scope of practice.iREC®3 focuses on those realities.
The qualification was developed in response to findings from the Manchester bombings report and reinforces three fundamental priorities:
- Preserve life
- Prevent deterioration
- Promote recovery
Its purpose is to equip Learners to provide appropriate immediate care at events before an ambulance arrives. It is intended particularly for those working, or preparing to work, in the events and security industries. This is not simply a general introduction to first aid. It is a structured immediate-response qualification covering patient assessment, life-threatening emergencies, medical conditions, injuries and major trauma.
Aligned with event-sector requirements
For event organisers and medical providers, choosing personnel with an appropriate and credible qualification is an important part of planning safe event medical provision.iREC®3 meets the Level 3 first-aid qualification requirements of both the Purple Guide and the Green Guide. It is also recognised by the First Aid Awarding Organisation Forum as an acceptable equivalent to a First Aid at Work qualification.
This means the qualification can support event organisers and medical providers as they plan appropriately trained staffing for outdoor events and other public environments. It is also classified as Category D on the Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care PHEM Skills Framework, covering nationally certificated non-healthcare professionals who provide pre-hospital care as a secondary role. As with any clinical or immediate-care qualification, certification does not provide a licence to practise. Responders must always work within their own or their organisation’s defined scope of practice, policies and agreed ways of working.
Practical learning for real-world incidents
iREC®3 consists of five mandatory components, bringing together the essential knowledge and practical capabilities needed by an immediate responder:
1. Principles of pre-hospital care
Learners explore the responsibilities of an immediate responder, including safe and person-centred care, communication, conflict management, scene safety, infection prevention, information governance and responder wellbeing.
2. Patient assessment
The qualification covers primary and secondary surveys, physiological measurements, patient history, clinical handover and the principles of patient extrication.
3. Life-threatening emergencies
Learners develop the ability to respond to an unresponsive patient, provide basic life support, use appropriate resuscitation devices, manage an obstructed airway and control life-threatening bleeding.
4. Illnesses and medical conditions
Content includes respiratory, cardiovascular and neurological emergencies, anaphylaxis, diabetic emergencies, poisoning, temperature-related conditions, mental health presentations, medication principles and oxygen therapy.
5. Injuries and major trauma
Learners cover wounds, burns, bleeding, musculoskeletal injuries, head and spinal injuries, chest and abdominal trauma, immobilisation, trauma assessment, triage and the appropriate management of an incident scene.
Together, these areas prepare Learners to make structured assessments, identify urgent problems and provide appropriate immediate intervention while awaiting further clinical support.
A regulated qualification with clear value
The FutureQuals Level 3 Award in Immediate Response Emergency Care is regulated by Ofqual and CCEA. It carries five credits, includes 37 guided learning hours and has a Total Qualification Time of 45 hours.
The certificate is valid for three years. Learners must complete all five mandatory components. Assessment includes practical evidence and two multiple-choice assessments delivered through the FutureQuals e-assessment platform.
The use of e-assessment helps Centres streamline elements of administration and assessment delivery. It also gives Learners clear, personalised feedback, helping them understand their performance and identify areas for further development.
The result is a qualification that combines robust practical assessment with a modern and efficient assessment experience.
