Functional Skills Qualification in English (Reform)

Qualification Overview

FutureQuals’ Level 2 Functional Skills Qualification in English is made up of three separate assessment components: Reading; Writing; and Speaking, Listening and Communicating.
Learners take each assessment individually and need to achieve all three components to pass the Functional Skills Qualification in English.

Functional Skills in English: Reading

Functional Skills in English: Reading is designed to provide learners with the skills needed to demonstrate their proficiency and confidence in reading in various contexts both in-and out-of-work, or education.

At Level 2, learners will be provided with an onscreen assessment paper and a source booklet, containing the information which they are expected to read, understand and respond to.

The assessment will present three texts in the source booklet, each with a series of questions relating to the texts, as well as questions requiring learners to compare two or three of the texts presented.

Functional Skills in English: Writing

Functional Skills in English: Writing is designed to provide learners with the skills needed to demonstrate a proficiency and confidence in writing in work, education and everyday life.

At Level 2, learners will be presented with two purposeful scenario-based writing tasks, each requiring a different type of written response, for example, a letter, short report, newspaper article or an email enquiry. Learners are not permitted to use a dictionary in this assessment.

Functional Skills in English: Speaking, Listening and Communicating

Functional Skills in English: Speaking, Listening and Communicating provides learners with the skills needed to be able to effectively interact with people with confidence. Learners will gain the ability to communicate in both working and social environments.

At Level 2, learners will be required to actively participate in one formal presentation and one group discussion. In the discussion, learners will be expected to consider and respond to information, ideas and opinions exchanged and give their own opinion on subjects, some of which may be unfamiliar.

The Speaking, Listening and Communicating component is sat by learners under controlled conditions, it is internally assessed by the centre and then externally moderated by FutureQuals.
